The boundaries of the Sierra Blanca range stretch from Monda in the North and Marbella to the South, Ojén in the East, and Istan to the West.
The name La Concha was recorded a century ago though before this, the mountain was called "Pico del Astonar", now the name given to the highest peak of the range.
Geologically the range is of a crystalline-extract nature, to the laymen amongst us this basically means that it is made up of both compact hard rock and weak stone, which deteriorates to provide the layer of loose soil that covers a large part of these Sierras. It has also created the gullies and valleys so clearly visible when looking at La Concha.
'La Concha’, is reputed to howl when the African winds blow. The mountainsides are covered in pine trees, pinsapos, walnut and olive trees, as well as wild orchids - Hispanic wild goats, eagles and Royal owls live there in absolute splendour.
Here you will find "Refugio del Juanar" which is located only half an hour from Marbella is a world of pure air, pine forest, mountains and wild animals. You can take a walk in the forest surrounding the refugio where you might see some of the wild mountain goats with their small ones. The Mirador (lookout point) is a short walk away and is 3000 feet above sea level offering fantastic views of Marbella and the Mediterranean.
To get here from Malaga, take motorway N-340 direction “Algeciras”. When you get to Marbella, take the motorway exit “Ojén” ( A-355 ) and follow by this road direction “Coín”, but don’t take the little road that goes to Ojén town, just follow A-355; 11 kms. from Marbella you will find another crossroad in you left indicated in a road sing as “Refugio de Juanar”, you have to follow by this little mountain road for another 5 kms. to arrive to the hotel.
