Hair today - Gone tomorrow!

She’s got perfect skin!

The quest for hair-free smooth skin is one that began with the human race and yet thousands of years on, pesky re-growth is the persistent bane of everyone’s beauty routine….

Especially when you live in a hot country were bikinis and shorts are the standard dress code for six to seven months of the year, forcing us to bare our flesh to one and all. Even if you simply like to holiday in hot countries, a major part of your preparation will be a visit to a beauty salon to remove unsightly hair growth, before you even consider donning your beachwear. And the desire for perfectly prepped beach skin is no longer the domain of women only, as the nineties and David Beckham made it cool for men to be image-conscious too, albeit few men are totally convinced of the benefits of regular waxing or wearing sarongs.

Nonetheless, the absence of body hair has been the blatant barometer of aesthetic beauty since the Dark Ages and it is believed that waxing actually began way back with the Egyptians, using a sugar-based mixture, which is still in use in some parts of the world, today. The latter half of the twentieth century saw an unprecedented explosion in the cosmetic industry. The rise and rise of the celebrity and reality shows such as Big Brother, paved the way for everyone to have their fifteen minutes of fame, and everyone wanted to look the part.

In response to consumer demand, a myriad of new hair removal treatments appeared on the market in the form of creams, gels and sophisticated shaving kits, but consumers were no longer satisfied with products that simply removed the hair for a day or a month, they demanded hair free skin, permanently. The most radical option to appear on the market was laser treatment, a system that uses a precise ultra-violet light to penetrate the pores and kill the hair follicles. However, although this treatment has been improved upon, it is still not without its critics, and most importantly, is restricted to use only on certain skin types (olive/dark skin with dark hairs).

Two specialist cosmetologists, working quietly away in Denmark, firmly believed that this is a beauty issue, which should not incur so much cost or inconvenience and so they set up a research programme to remove the problem and the hair, once and for all, permanently. This was the objective that Dr. Kim Julian and Dr. Jan Renneberg set for themselves and their team, more than four years ago, and today, the result is available is the form of a product called Epilarä. This amazing new cosmetic cream has just been launched in Spain and Portugal and promises to permanently remove unwanted body hair in just eight to twelve pain-free treatments.

So how does Epilarä work? Epilarä consists of two gels, one an inhibitor and the other, an activator. This basically means that the first gel initiates the process of penetrating and killing the hair follicle while the second gel eliminates any viscosity, ensuring a smooth application. Epilarä is exclusively available from specialist beauty salons, as a professional beautician can only apply it after waxing or plucking with a tweezers, in order to ensure the hair follicle in clean and empty and the gels can work effectively. It is also important that regularity is maintained between treatments to catch the hair re-growth at the right stage. To date, test trials in Denmark have shown excellent results, with most people experiencing a significant reduction in hair growth in just eight to twelve treatments, which is the equivalent of eight to twelve months.

Epilarä also offers many advantages over laser treatment. First and foremost is the cost, as a series of Epilarä sessions is significantly cheaper than the equivalent laser treatment. According to those who have tried it, laser can also be quite painful and leaves the skin feeling tender for a number of days after the treatment. With Epilarä the same precautions that apply to waxing, apply to its use, such as avoiding exposing the treated area to sunlight, water and other creams for at least twenty-four hours after the treatment. Only those skin types that are sensitive to waxing are precluded from using Epilarä, which is a small number of people.

The distribution of Epilarä in Spain and Portugal has been awarded to two professional salons, Nasari Hair & Beauty Salon in Marbella, Spain and Sanobia Beauty Centre in Lisbon, Portugal, but obviously the product is still new and therefore availability is limited. Kimmie Birch is the owner of Nasari and she has been offering the Epilarä to her clients for three months now and she comments; “naturally some people are sceptical when a product claims to do so much, but all customers who have tried it are happy so far. I have actually been using Epilarä myself now for a number of months and cannot believe the results. We will be approaching salons throughout Spain in 2005 and would hope that everyone can benefit from this product in the very near future”.
