FUENGIROLA is ahead of other councils in the Costa del Sol regarding the picking up of recyclable waste. Nonetheless, there is more to be done, according to the councillor of hygiene, Ana Mata, who recently said that there was a need to increase the number of recyclable waste containers in an attempt to try to make the local residents aware of the necessity and to have the option to recycle more of their waste.
At the moment, the municipality provides 312 containers, 180 of which are for cardboard and waste paper and 132 for glass bottles; a figure which the councillor criticised because of the uneven distribution of these containers between the localities.
The claims go even further, since the council have requested a fleet of modern waste recovery units, which would allow containers to be lifted sideways onto the vehicles.
They have also requested containers with an increased capacity of 2,400 litres instead of the current 1,100 litres to increase the amount of materials recycled and reduce the visual impact.
They have also demanded the renewal of 100 containers which are in a bad state of deterioration, the majority for which are used for the collection of waste paper and cardboard.
The councillor added “we work hard to keep Fuengirola clean, nice and welcoming; something that is made difficult for us with the presence of old deteriorated waste containers”.
She explained that most of these containers were located near the promenade and others surrounded tourist areas. |
