THE uncle of Scots boxer Scott Harrison has been found hanging from a tree in the Cathkin Braes in the south of Glasgow in Scotland. The body of Jack McGill, aged 52, who lived alone in East Kilbride, was found by a passer-by. His death has been ruled as suicide as no suspicious circumstances have come to light.
McGill was an ex-pro fighter and the brother of Harrison’s mother. It is believed he was depressed after falling out with the family. He lost his licence in December 2006 after failing to make a fight against Nicky Cook; the second title defence he had cancelled. Harrison, aged 30, resigned as WBO featherweight champion the same month. It recently emerged that he was officially broke, despite having earned almost two million euros from his nine-year career in the ring.
McGill was facing trial in Malaga alongside Harrison on charges of assaulting a police officer and trying to steal a car. Harrison was sent to Alhaurin de la Torre prison and later allowed out on 28,000 euros bail.
An international warrant had been issued for McGill’s arrest after he failed to appear at the court hearing. Harrison’s trial was postponed last month after the judge fell ill. The case is set for September and he could face up to 11 years in jail.
It has been suggested McGill was to admit his guilt in Spain in a bid to let Harrison go free and get his boxing career back on track. His death could lead to Harrison getting his boxing licence back.
Harrison, who is separated and has two children, faces another trial in Spain after he was involved in a fight at a brothel in Alhaurin el Grande in which three people were injured. The Magistrate’s Court in Coin set him free without bail. The other two men involved, who live on the outskirts of Alhaurin el Grande and are known to behave violently, were also released from custody. |
