Angeles Munoz, mayoress of Marbella has announced that the town hall will publish its new Safety and Security Plan for the summer months at the beginning of June, in order to improve standards and guarantee public safety levels.
Munoz has met with the councillors for Citizen Safety and for Industry, Maria Francisca Caracuel and Alicia Jimenez, as well as members of the local and national police forces. She stated that Marbella was a safe town but would have to keep working to maintain standards and that as many people came to the town to enjoy leisure activities, the council had to ensure they did so always respecting the rules in force.
The mayoress announced that very shortly special teams were to be set up with local and national police working together with inspectors of public places in order to control activities in local squares and streets. She said that many traders infringed the law and more vigilance was necessary.
More breath-tests to check alcohol levels are planned over the summer to deal with the greater affluence of people, especially in key spots including Puerto Banus, Marbella centre and San Pedro. Munoz reminded those present that the town hall would not benefit financially from these measures as they were costly to implement. She stated that offences involving street peddlers and prostitution would continue to be fully penalised.
Munoz said she would soon be meeting with the Centro de Iniciativas Turisticas to discuss alternative ‘video-vigilance’ strategies that could be installed in Puerto Banus for greater security. She also expressed her disapproval at the central government’s rejection of a proposal from the town hall, stating there had to be an ‘alarming increase in crime’ in the area for them to give their support. |
