The environmental education association, Aulaga, has called on the people of Malaga to use synthetic pine trees instead of real ones this Christmas in an effort to conserve the province’s pine forests. Aulaga president Inés Checa said the pine forests are already threatened by a model of agricultural, tourism and industrial development that is unsustainable. She urged people to go back to the traditional Nativity scenes which are much more rooted in the Mediterranean and Andalusian culture than Christmas trees, which is a custom imported from northern Europe.
