A MOUNTAINEER from San Pedro de Alcantara, Manuel Gonzalez, who was attempting to climb the Makalu in the Himalayas, had to be taken by helicopter to Kathmandu and then flown back to Zaragoza with his team, after suffering frostbite in three toes of his right foot.
The Makalu is the fifth highest peak in the world, but Manuel and his group weren’t able to see the top of it this time, in an expedition which has been full of problems including the death of one of the sherpas.
Extreme weather conditions meant the team were only able to reach 8,300 metres and Manuel didn’t get that far as he had stayed behind and tried to reach base camp with another member of the team who had fainted.
The frostbite had been treated by another member of the team and it is hoped that Manuel will not lose the toes.
Manuel climbed Everest in the year 2,000, being the first person from Andalucia to do so, but his attempts to climb K-2 and Makalu have not been successful. |
