Sexist Publicity in Spain not tolerated

This Spanish News Item in English was published on : Sunday, June 15, 2008 (ID:3118)

IN Malaga, the second international congress for the study of gender and equality, entitled, ‘la Imagen publica de la mujer’ (women’s public image) was held recently. The objective was to analyse, from many perspectives, the image of women across the media, new technologies, publicity and language.

Despite general progress in gender enhancement, the publicity industry and the mass-media in general haven’t reflected universal changes in attitude, giving rise to calls to further consider the issue and strengthen policies relating to equality.

The ‘Centro Municipal de Informacion a la Mujer de Nerja’ (Women’s Information Centre) has encouraged media providers to communicate a real image of women, free of stereotypes and in line with modern society, wherein gender equality has prevailed.

To this end, the ‘Concejalia de Igualdad del Excmo’ of Nerja, through their website, www.nerja.es/igualdad has invited anyone who wishes to comment or make a formal complaint about a particular example of sexists publicity. These complaints would be displayed on a forum where users could submit opinions and suggestions and advertising watchdogs in Andalucia could then use the information to proceed with future actions.
