NATIONAL POLICE in Estepona arrested a 32-year-old man from Malaga who stole objects from several churches in the town and then attempted to sell the goods to local priests.
He apparently stole a chalice and offered it to a priest who refused to buy it. He claimed the chalice had been in his family for years and now he wanted to sell it.
Several days later, the same priest found objects had been stolen from his own church, including a goblet with his name on it which had been given to him to mark his fifty years as a priest.
The thief also attempted to sell this goblet and showed it to another priest, who also refused to buy it, but then contacted the owner, telling him what had happened.
The thief continued to ransack other churches and made an offer to yet another priest, who agreed to buy the goblet to prevent it from being lost.
Several days later, the organ disappeared from his church.
The priest contacted the National Police who are now attempting to find the stolen goods, although two chalices have been recovered so far. |
