Forty five illegal immigrants have drowned while trying to reach the Canary Islands over the weekend.
According to information from the Red Cross in Mauritania, the first boat sank after a collision with a fishing boat off the coast of Western Sahara on Friday.
The vessel had been at sea for two days with 45 people on board.
Twenty three of them died.
The second boat capsized on Saturday, 20 kilometres off the northern coast of Nouadhibou.
Twenty two of the 46 passengers drowned.
