Australian surfer Mark Occhilupo has become the first big-name casualty at the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tournament at Mundaka, Spain, beaten by Brazilian Armando Daltro.
The 46th-ranked Brazilian won a low-scoring, second-round affair to consign Occhilupo to his second consecutive 33rd place finish on the tour. Daltro won the heat 11.17 to 10.17.
The 38-year-old Australian was expected to do well at the venue in Spain's Basque region having won the event on his way to the world title in 1999.
Fellow Australian and world number four Joel Parkinson also found scoring difficult in the long left-handers but he held on to beat American wildcard Pete Mendia 8.83 to 8.34.
The other Australian top seeds Taj Burrow and Luke Egan also progressed against wildcard opposition. Burrow beat local Hodei Collazo while Egan knocked out fellow Australian Shaun Cansdell.
Egan was particularly impressive with two eight-point-plus rides.
Also progressing were Damien Hobgood (US), Taylor Knox (US), Shane Beschen (US), Raoni Monteiro (Brazil) plus Australians Troy Brooks, Nathan Webster, Jake Paterson, Daniel Wills, Darren O'Rafferty and Trent Munro who posted the day's best single score of 9.6.
Other Australians did not fare so well, with Luke Hitchings, Beau Emerton, Toby Martin, Mick Campbell and Kieren Perrow eliminated. |
